The Route of the Castles was developed to regain the appreciation for the heritage and the traditional local activities.

The Route of the Castles gives the tourist, as well as the inhabitants of Huelva, the opportunity to study in depth the cultural and historical aspects of the province, showing a new perspective, from which they can appreciate the light charm, discovering all of its natural, cultural and artistic resources, with tradition, personality and economy first of all rural. It integrates elements like castles that can be visited, architecture, rural and urban environments, natural reserves, artistical and historical monuments.

This Route was created with active participation from several parties involved as well as to determine the different aspects of the projects as the design of the various routes and the way they will be maintained. The goal is to provide an integrated tourist product to recover and revalue the history and heritage of the region, based on ecological development.

The Route of the Castles is an excellent way to experience the historical value and heritage of the towns and regions of the Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park. Any time of year is fine for a visit, but it is recommendable to use a car or public transport to travel between the towns on the way: Although there are several possible approaches to this route, we suggest an east-to-west itinerary that will allow you to visit a dozen of the fortresses that were once part of the three historical lines of defence. These castles are spread out across various townships and their state of conservation varies.
